DMEDD was established on September 24, 1981 with the purpose of assisting and supporting the families of Turkish diplomats and officials from other Ministries who have been assassinated on active duty abroad.
DMEDD achieved the status of “Association for Public Benefit” in 1984. In the following years, it has expanded the scope of its activities and become a prominent association that contributes to efforts and activities nationwide in the fields of education, culture, health, as well as promotion of Turkey.
Since its foundation, the education of children has always been one of the main priorities for DMEDD. To this end, thanks to the genuine moral and financial support of its members and friends, DMEDD provides many scholarships, primarily to the children of martyrs, but also to the children of needy officials and supporting staff of the MFA, as well as to the high school and university level children of earthquake victims and girl students in the developing regions of Anatolia.
Within the framework of social responsibility projects, especially on education and health, DMEDD has built pre-schools, schools and dormitory buildings and financed the renovation and the refurbishment of many schools along with hospitals and health clinics. Moreover, it continues to supply educational materials, books and clothes to disadvantaged schools from different regions of Turkey.
In cooperation and collaboration with different official and private institutions, foundations and associations, DMEDD has provided valuable contributions to several national projects and campaigns on education, health and environment.
In this context, DMEDD also supports international aid campaigns. Presently, under the auspices of Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu and his spouse Mrs.Sare Davutoğlu, DMEDD and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs completed an international campaign to help Pakistan recover from the devastating flood disaster of August 2010. All proceeds were transferred to Turkish International Cooperation Agency (TICA) on December 26,2011 to build a hospital in the region.
In order to promote and support environmental awareness, DMEDD started growing 3 forests around Ankara in Gölbaşı, Sincan and Polatlı between 1995-1997. Besides its valuable contribution to the “10 Billion Acorn” Campaign of the TEMA Foundation in 1999-2000, our association continues to support this Foundation and its many other important endavours.
In addition to the above-mentioned areas, to assist the promotion of Turkey and to introduce the new members of foreign missions and international organizations in Ankara to Turkish tradition and lifestyle, DMEDD organizes many social and cultural activities. These activities and courses are: Turkish language classes, book clubs and conversation groups in different languages, Turkish history, art and traditional crafts classes, conferences, lectures, art exhibitions, concerts, Turkish and foreign culinary days, cultural tours to different regions of Turkey, bridge courses and tournaments.
All our activities are announced in our English and Turkish monthly newsletters as well as at our web site.
Furthermore, DMEDD organizes an Annual Charity Bazaar with the participation of Foreign Missions in Ankara and the contributions of Turkish Missions abroad. Due to the high quality and variety of materials put on sale; this bazaar has almost an international reputation and attracts a great number of visitors each year.
DMEDD also joins the national day celebrations through its annual “Republic Day Ball” organized under the auspices of the President of the Turkish Republic at the historic venue of Ankara, Ankara Palace.
With the assistance and support of its members and friends, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spouses’ Solidarity Association will continue to work for the benefit of Turkish society in the future.
